Let's create a shift...
Why?
The Design and Construction industry is undergoing a seismic shift. Today's consumers are increasingly informed and invested in the health and environmental implications of their living spaces. This evolving awareness isn't a passing trend but a fundamental change in priorities, opening up a vast market eager for homes that embody wellness and sustainability. Recognizing this, I see a golden opportunity for us as professionals to redefine excellence in design, not just by aesthetics but by the positive impact of our work on human health and the environment.
Addressing our material choices
In the bustling world of design and architecture, the materials and practices we choose are often influenced by cost, availability, and aesthetic appeal. However, a rising concern that demands our attention is the health implications of our choices. Modern building materials, with their convenience and durability, also bring along a hidden cost—volatile organic compounds (VOCs), toxic chemicals, and highly stimulating environments that can silently affect the health of those who inhabit the spaces we create. We need to communicate to the customers the significant health risks posed by using conventional toxic building materials—such as indoor air pullution from VOCs and mould—which can lead to a spectrum of health issues including respiratory diseases, neurological issues, and organ damage.
Overstimulating Environments
As designers we need to recognise the profound impact that overstimulating environments can have on individuals, particularly those with neurological conditions such as ADHD (5% of children and 2.5% of adults worldwide affected), Autism (1% of the worldwide child population) and Migraines (15% of the population affected). Our environments, when filled with busy patterns, unmanaged noise pollution, poor air quality due to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and harsh lighting, can become sources of discomfort and distress. These elements can trigger a range of reactions that negatively affect the nervous system and daily functioning of such individuals.
The demand for change in our industry
As awareness around the importance of healthy, sustainable living spaces continues to grow, so does the demand for professionals who can deliver on these expectations. Clients are increasingly willing to invest in designs that promise not only beauty and functionality but also health benefits and environmental sustainability. This shift represents a lucrative opportunity for designers and architects who can lead with specialized knowledge and skills in this area. Specializing in healthy building design allows you to offer something unique that goes beyond traditional architecture and interior design services. By aligning your services with these values, you can not only increase your design fees for your expertise, but you can also create spaces that truly make a difference and become part of the revolution!

My Mission: Healthier people, Healthier Planet...
Reflecting on my own health struggles, I researched scienced based studies on how the environment can affect our ability to heal by overwhelming our nervous system with pollutants and sensory overload.. Filled with my new found knowledge, I knew I had to make big changes in my life and start to heal my body and mind. I also realised the critical need for awareness in creating healthier living spaces.
Now, my mission is clear: Sharing my knowledge to empower and create change..
Understanding the hidden risks in our living spaces is critical. Without this knowledge, we risk our health and that of our families, potentially suffering in the very places meant to be our sanctuaries.
Imagine living in a space that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also a haven for your health. A home that enhances your well-being, energizes your days, and offers peace of mind.
Together, we can make this vision a reality!
