How Fragrances are the new second hand smoke and how they affect our health

how synthetic fragrances can affect your health

In today's world, synthetic fragrances and perfumes are found in everything from personal care products to household cleaners. However, a growing body of research indicates that these pleasant scents may carry significant risks to human health.

In the pursuit of a truly healthy home, it's imperative to address a common, yet often overlooked, source of indoor pollution: synthetic fragrances. These artificial scents, pervasive in many household cleaning products, air fresheners, and personal care items, promise to freshen our spaces but at a hidden cost to our health and environment.

Fragranced products have been associated with a range of adverse health effects, such as migraine headaches, asthma attacks, respiratory difficulties, neurological problems, mucosal symptoms, and contact dermatitis (Kim et al. 2015; Elberling et al. 2005; Millqvist and Löwhagen 1996; Kumar et al. 1995; Kelman 2004; Caress and Steinemann 2004, 2005; Johansen 2003; Rastogi et al. 2007; Sealey et al. 2015). In two previous national surveys of the US population, 19 % reported breathing difficulties, headaches, or other health problems when exposed to air fresheners and deodorizers, and 10.9 % reported health problems from the scent of laundry products vented outdoors (Caress and Steinemann 2009).

Other health issues reported include hay fever, dizziness, nausea and seizures.

Lack of Transparency and Regulation

One of the most concerning aspects of synthetic fragrances is the lack of ingredient disclosure required by law. A study published in the Environmental Health Perspectives journal highlighted the "fragrance loophole" in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) regulations that allows companies to withhold fragrance ingredients as trade secrets (Dodson et al., 2012). This lack of transparency leaves consumers unaware of the potential dangers lurking in their favorite scented products.

Synthetic fragrances often contain a cocktail of harmful chemicals. Research by Steinemann (2016) in the Air Quality, Atmosphere & Health journal found that common fragrance products can emit dozens of different volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including some that are classified as hazardous or toxic under U.S. federal laws. Alarmingly, these substances are not listed on product labels.

Respiratory Issues and Asthma

The impact of synthetic fragrances on respiratory health is well-documented. The American Lung Association warns that certain ingredients in fragranced products can trigger asthma attacks and exacerbate respiratory allergies. A study conducted by the University of Melbourne (Caress and Steinemann, 2009) revealed that nearly one-third of Australians reported adverse health effects from exposure to fragranced products, with respiratory problems being among the most common complaints.

Endocrine Disruption and Other Health Risks

Phthalates, commonly found in synthetic fragrances, are known endocrine disruptors. The Endocrine Society's research (Gore et al., 2015) has linked phthalate exposure to hormonal imbalances, reproductive issues, and increased risk of certain cancers. Moreover, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) supports findings that phthalates may affect human health, particularly in vulnerable populations like pregnant women and children.

Neurological Impact and Sensory Sensitivities

For individuals with neurological conditions, exposure to synthetic fragrances can be a significant trigger. The Headache journal published a study indicating that certain odors, including those from perfumes, can provoke migraines and severe headaches in susceptible individuals (Martin & Behbehani, 2006). Furthermore, people with sensory processing sensitivities, such as those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), may find synthetic fragrances overwhelming, leading to increased anxiety, agitation, and sensory overload.

Hormonal Disruption and Weight Concerns

The endocrine-disrupting properties of certain chemicals in synthetic fragrances, particularly phthalates, not only pose risks to reproductive health but may also interfere with body weight regulation. Research suggests that these chemicals can influence fat storage and energy metabolism, potentially leading to weight gain or difficulties in losing weight. A review in the Environmental Health Perspectives journal elaborates on how endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) can alter hormonal functions, impacting obesity and metabolic disorders (Holtcamp, 2012).

Dizziness and Cognitive Effects

Exposure to synthetic fragrances has also been associated with dizziness and cognitive impairments. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other chemicals in fragrances can affect indoor air quality and, when inhaled, may lead to neurological symptoms including dizziness, reduced concentration, and memory issues. This is particularly concerning in environments like schools and workplaces, where cognitive function and focus are paramount.

Environmental Impact

The dangers of synthetic fragrances extend beyond human health, posing risks to wildlife and ecosystems. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which include some components of synthetic fragrances, can accumulate in the environment, leading to long-term ecological damage.

Embracing Fragrance-Free and Natural Alternatives

Choosing fragrance-free or naturally scented products is a significant step toward safeguarding your home's air quality and your family's health. Here are some strategies to help you make the transition:

- Fragrance-Free products: When shopping for cleaning and personal care products, look for those labeled "fragrance-free" or "unscented." This choice reduces your exposure to the harmful chemicals often hidden behind the term "fragrance" on ingredient lists.

- Natural Air Fresheners: Instead of commercial air fresheners, consider natural alternatives like essential oil diffusers, which use pure essential oils derived from plants to scent your home safely. Not only do these offer a pleasant aroma, but many essential oils also have additional health benefits, such as antimicrobial properties.

- DIY Cleaning Solutions: Embrace the power of simple, natural ingredients for your cleaning needs. Vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils can be combined in various ways to create effective, non-toxic cleaning products that leave your home clean and naturally fresh without the need for synthetic fragrances.

- Purify with Air purifiers: Air purifiers play a crucial role in enhancing indoor air quality, offering a multitude of benefits for homeowners and renters alike. By effectively removing pollutants such as dust, pollen, pet dander, and smoke particles from the air, these devices significantly reduce the risk of respiratory problems and allergies. For individuals with asthma or other respiratory conditions, air purifiers can create a safer and more comfortable living environment. Additionally, certain models are equipped to capture and neutralize harmful microorganisms and viruses, contributing to a healthier home atmosphere. Air purifiers also help in eliminating odors, leaving your living space feeling fresher and cleaner. By investing in an air purifier, you're not only improving the air you breathe but also supporting overall well-being, enhancing sleep quality, and creating a more inviting home environment.
